How to overcome Learning Difficulties
As a Parent you should know Learning Difficulties in Children
Nowadays many children undergo a lot of stress
related to academics from a very tender age. Maintaining a relation with
school, environment, curriculum and activities has become an everyday
challenge. These children have difficulty in following classroom instructions,
reading, mathematical operations, writing or doing any other task related to
academics. Their overall development in turn hampers and eventually becomes a
target for peer rejection, which leads to low self – esteem. Children
undergoing such a situation are the ones having “Learning Difficulties”.
School can become an unhappy place for such
kids. These kids are often misunderstood and may be mistaken or seen lazy or
maybe poor motivated.
The learning problems in the child may be due
to mild mental retardation, borderline level of intelligence or specific
learning disabilities. These kids are found to be normal in their sensory,
motor and intellectual abilities but they perform poorly in scholastic areas. The
category of “LD” is a relatively a new addition to the field of Special
Education.

* Difficulty in sequencing, calculations and as
well as problem solving.
How to overcome Learning Difficulties
Students just
seem to have a hard time in class than others. It’s difficult for them to keep
a track on their belongings/materials, figure out how to tackle projects, and
keep up with studies, which often leaves the child, parent and teacher in
stress. These signs are brain based developmental delays. The parents who can
recognize these can help their children to succeed.
A few easy steps for parents to guide the child –
* Learn
more about LD – The more you know, the more you can help yourself and your
child. Keep a positive working relationship with your child’s teacher. Have
regular communication, exchange information about the child’s growth at home
and at school.
* Praise
your child when he or she does well. Children with LD are often very good at a
variety of things. Find out what your child really enjoys doing. (Ex- dancing,
music, art & craft, playing soccer or working with computers) Give your
child plenty of opportunities to pursue his or her strengths/talents.
* Find
out the ways your child learns best – by hands on practice, looking or
listening.
* Let
your child help you with household chores – This can build self confidence and
concrete skill, keep instructions simple, break down task into smaller steps
and reward his/her efforts with praise.
* Make
homework a priority – Read more about how to help your child be a success at
homework.
* Pay
attention to your child’s mental health (and your own) – Be cool and open to
counsel, which can help your child deal with frustration, feel better about
self and learn more about social skills.\
* Talk
to other parents whose kids have LD. Parents can share practical advice and
emotional support.
