Dyslexia Learning Styles

DO YOU KNOW WHAT IS YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING STYLE?

There are 4 styles of learning - VAKT Learning style

Visual learning style involves the use of seen to observed things, including pictures, diagrams, demonstrations, displays, hangouts, flip-charts, films, etc.
Auditory learning style involves the transfer of information through listening, to the spoken word, of self or others, of sounds and noises.
Kinaesthetic learning involves physical experience – doing, moving, practical hands of experiences.
Tactile learning involves touching, holding, feeling.

If you suspect your child might have dyslexia, you should know that:
“Not all visual learners have dyslexia, but all children with dyslexia are visual learners.”

The child with dyslexia will do better with visual teaching tools rather than learning through reading, writing, or lectures. These children take in information through watching videos, plays, movies, etc. They pick up ton of information from their environment. Because of their visual learning style, children with dyslexia often enter school as bright, gifted kids, eager learners.

VAKT Learning Style Approach

* Visual – Pictures, Movies, Videos, Flow-Charts, Experiments, Maps, Posters, Field Trips.

Visual learners prefer to study using written notes, diagrams, or pictures. Image is everything to a visual learner. They also need to see the teacher’s body language and facial expression to fully understand the content of a lesson. They tend to prefer sitting in front of the classroom to avoid visual obstructions. They also prefer to take detailed notes to absorb the information.

* Auditory-  Plays, Speeches, Debates, Music or Songs, Reading aloud.

Auditory learners will listen to a lecture, and then write down their thoughts afterward. They will benefit from reading study notes aloud rather than simply looking at them. They learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, and listening to what others have to say. They interpret the underlying meanings of speech through listening to a tone of voice, pitch, speed. These learners often benefit from reading text aloud and using a tape recorder.

* Kinaesthetic- Art & Craft, Games, Hands-on practice, Letter Tiles, Scrabble.

The kinaesthetic learner prefers to be physically involved in learning using his body, his hands and his sense of touch. They learn best through hands-on practice, actively exploring the physical world around them. They may find it hard to sit still for long periods and may become distracted.

* Tactile- Art 7 Craft, Clay modelling, Gardening, Sewing, Painting, Dress-up.

Tactile learners prefer hands work, example- handling materials or taking notes. Working on an experiment in the laboratory is the best way for such children to learn new material. Writing notes or instruction can help such learners to remember information easily and physical involvement in the class pays major role in their retention of the information.

OUR LEARNING STYLE IS FORCED UPON US THROUGH LIFE LIKE THIS:
: In grades Kindergarten to 3rd , new information is introduced to us kinaesthetically,
: Grades 4th to 8th are visually introduced.
: While grades 9th to college and on into the business environment, information is introduced to us mostly auditory through the use of lectures.

According to the VAK theorists, we need to introduce information using all three styles. This allows all learners the opportunity to become involved, no matter what their preferred style may be.
